Autobiographer Attributes Success to Embracing Abilities Over Challenges
By Trenaya Reid, Life Rollz On
As a person with a physical disability, I have overcame many challenges in my life. I was born with a rare orthopedic condition called Arthrogryposis, that affects 1 to 3,000 births per year. I feel having my disability has blessed me in a number of ways; I have never looked at it as a hindrance.
Arthrogryposis Diagnosis Engenders a Life of Advocacy
I consider myself a champion for ADA Rights and Advocacy for those with disabilities. My own disability has paved the way for me to become an advocate and mentor for others with disabilities since I was younger. Within my career, I have been in the space of disability advocacy for over eight years; conducting over a dozen presentations on disability advocacy and etiquette.
Throughout the last 29 years, I have been faced with a number of stereotypes, from early childhood to adulthood. Despite all the prejudice and hurdles I faced, I still managed to excel in my education, career and personal goals.
You can, too.
'Life Rollz On' Shares Practical Advice on Prevailing Over Adversity
One major accomplishment was writing my first book, my autobiography titled Life Rollz On.
I have chosen to write my autobiography to encourage readers who have disabilities, parents who have children with disabilities and professionals/caregivers that work with those with disabilities. No matter the challenges and obstacles that occur within our lives, we can still move forward to pursue our dreams. I want my readers to apply some of the key takeaways in my autobiography in their own lives. Whether a person has a disability or is able-bodied, many of the challenges and successes I have encountered can happen to anyone.
Apart from authoring my book, I pursued my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science, along with a Spanish Certification, at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA in 2016. During my academic journey, I interned at Temple University's Disability Resource Center, which provided me with the opportunity to match students with disabilities to federal internships and job opportunities.
This experience sparked my passion for further aiding individuals with disabilities in their pursuit of employment. It fueled my desire to continue advocating for those with disabilities throughout the employment process, from the initial hiring stages to job placement.
After graduating Temple University, I moved forward to pursue my master's degree in public administration at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida in 2018. My graduate research focused on education and employment for the disability community and laid the groundwork for my current work. I am a program manager for a non-profit organization where I assist those with disabilities with finding jobs or returning to work.
I give special thanks to my family and friends that have supported me along the way. I would not be where I am today without the support of my parents, siblings, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Even though those with disabilities face challenges, it's important to look at the "abilities" and not the disabilities. With a positive mindset, we can achieve anything we put our mind to.
My autobiography Life Rollz On can be found on my website, as well as on Amazon.
