Course Description:
This course will review the types and secondary medical complications and postural effects on an individual following a spinal cord injury. We will discuss evidence of supported standing devices and the benefits of supported standing in-home programs across the lifespan for individuals with spinal cord injuries.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of the course the participant will be able to:

  • Describe at least two medical complications that can occur after a spinal cord injury related to prolonged sitting.
  • Discuss two postural changes that can occur after a spinal cord injury related to prolonged sitting.
  • Explain three benefits of integrating supported standing in-home programs across the lifespan

Course Description:
This education session will summarize the evidence available for secondary effects related to prolonged sitting following paralysis, supported standing devices across the lifespan of individuals with SCI, and exercise recommendations for adults with SCI.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of the course the participant will be able to:

  • Describe two secondary effects related to prolonged sitting for individuals living with a spinal cord injury.
  • Identify two evidence-based exercise recommendations for adults living with spinal cord injury.
  • Identify two examples of how supported standing devices can be utilized as a tool to achieve exercise recommendations for adults living with spinal cord injury.

Course Instructor

Kristen Cezat, PT, DPT, ATP/SMS, Altimate Medical

Kristen Cezat is a Board-Certified Specialist in Neurologic Physical Therapy and a RESNA-certified ATP/SMS. She received her DPT from the University of Central Florida in 2011. She has dedicated her career to rehabilitation and improving lives for adults with spinal cord injury (SCI) and other neurologic conditions through clinical practice and program development. She received the APTA SCI Special Interest Group (SIG) award for Clinical Excellence in SCI Care and is currently serving her second term on leadership for the APTA ANPT SCI special interest group.

Kristen is the Clinical Education Specialist for Altimate Medical Inc. She has presented nationally on various topics related to assistive technology recommendations and interventions and current evidence in spinal cord injury rehabilitation, emphasizing translation into clinical practice.
