Community mobility is a necessary element of day-to-day life, and important in ensuring our connection to school, work, leisure and social activities. The most common mode of transportation in the U.S. is a personal vehicle, and public transportation can be unreliable and often does not accommodate wheelchair or accessibility needs. These realities mean adapting a vehicle for community mobility – as a passenger or driver – is a critical yet expensive need. Many elements of the process, including hand controls, wheelchair accessible minivans, and high-tech driving systems can be big-ticket items.
This presentation will address how to be a wise consumer, avoid common problems with adapting a personal vehicle for community mobility as well as the importance of working in advance with a mobility equipment dealer, Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist and a wheelchair source.
The driver rehabilitation process and possible funding resources for modifications will also be reviewed.
